BiographyJ.O., as he was known while living in Lodi, came to WI from Sutton, MA. He first settled [1842] in Walworth County, where he was married and engaged in the mercantile business. In 1845, he and his family moved to Racine, WI for three years and he also engaged in the mercantile business. His family came to Lodi in 1848, after he had visited several locations to find a new place to start a business. He again entered the mercantile business and was postmaster at Lodi for a number of years. He also was assistant U.S. Assessor for about five years. He was a traveling salesman for about thirteen years. In his later years, he put up a building and sold boots and shoes.
He was one of the founders of the Lodi Presbyterian Church. It was through his effort that the large, excellent church bell was procured for the belfry. He loved to ring the bell and prided himself on the regularity and correctness in ringing it. 
DeathJames died on 28 February 1893 in Lodi, Columbia County, Wisconsin, at age 74. 
BurialHe was buried in Mt Pleasant Cemetery, Lodi, Columbia County, Wisconsin.
